The future (and past) of ground based galaxy evolution surveys in the JWST era?

Karl Glazebrook

The imminent launch of JWST will see a huge revolution in our approach to galaxy evolution at high-redshift. The old synergy of HST imaging + ground based spectra will be gone as JWST/NIRSPEC will be an order of magnitude more sensitive for rest-frame optical spectroscopy than ground based facilities. I will discuss possible approaches for the ground-based future, emphasising where ground-based facilities (esp. HSC, PFS and ULTIMATE) can provide complementarity to JWST, building on lessons learned in recent years.
